In the Words of an Old Song...
"Work your fingers to the bone,
What do you get?
Boney fingers!"
I've been practicing all morning -- it seemed appropos.
An appoggiatura is a decorative addition to the primary theme of a piece of music. This blog is (hopefully) a decorative addition to the primary theme of my life.

someone was telling me that pianists put glue on the ends of their fingers when they start cracking and bleeding. is that true?
If your skin is healthy and you're not practicing in sub-zero temperatures, this shouldn't really be an issue. I've only met one person who bleeds when playing; in that case, it's a combination of hammering on the keys (a no-no!) and dry skin (unfortunate). My skin cracks from dry skin frequently, but never on the fingertips or because of practicing.
I think the glue idea is a primitive type of liquid bandaid. So that's entirely possible. And there have been pianists who hammer throughout the centuries, so I wouldn't be surprised.
So are you working on anything fun right now?
The most fun is my Saint-Saens -- a fairly obscure caprice on Russian and Danish folksongs for woodwind trio and piano. If we had a little more rehearsal time before my mini-lecture-recital, I'd feel better about it. Still, it's neat to be able to play all these 32nd-note runs at 135!
...you've only met one person who bleeds when playing... *gasp!* Why do I think that's me?! LOL! Are you saying I hammer on the keys? (Oh, no!) Well, I'll try to be more careful...
Playing 32nd-note runs at 135 sounds fun. ;) Tsk, can't hammer those, I bet.
